Music Therapy name songs for special needs individuals.
Goal 1: Client will state their name in response to who and what questions.
Goal 2: Client will state the names of their family, friends, teachers, and classmates in response to who and what questions.
Domains: Social, Language, Speech
Who questions were addressed in a more general way with a previous project. In Who Do You Know? people were identified by their job titles. In Who Are You? people are identified by their proper names. Because there are 5163 different first names in common use in the United States alone, I did not make recordings for all of them. So, you will need to provide verbal models for your student. With a little technical ingenuity, you can even add your (or your student’s) voice to the recordings.
We start off simple, asking a child to state their name. This is in response to two different questions: “Who are you?” and “What is your name?” Musically speaking, a four-syllable answer sounds best.
For a 4-syllable name simply answer: (name).
For a 3-syllable name answer: I’m (name).
For a 2-syllable name answer: I am (name).
For a 1-syllable name answer: My name is (name).
The next version of the song changes pronouns. “Who are you?” becomes “Who am I?” and “What is your name?” becomes “What is my name?” Model your preferred answer.
4-syllable name: Jeffrey Lehman.
3-syllable name: You’re Jeff Lehman.
2-syllable name: You are Jeffrey.
1-syllable name: Your name is Jeff.
Next, we can ask “Who is she?” or “Who is he?” to have students identify classmates or people in news stories or history lessons.
While most kids will call their parents mom and dad, if a child gets separated from a parent in a public place, being able to answer “Who is your mother?” or “Who is your father?” with a proper name will help to successfully reunite them.
The ability to answer or even ask “Who is your sister?”, “Who is your brother?”, or “Who is your teacher?” will help kids interact socially with their peers.
Finally, there is an instrumental version of the song included if you want to ask about grandmas, grandpas, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, etc.
