When Questions
Music Therapy when question videos & songs for special needs individuals.
Goal: Client will answer when questions related to morning/night, summer/winter, holidays, days of the week, clock time, and conditions.
Domains: Language, Academics
What is a thing. Where is a place (or position). Who is a person. When answers are more complicated. Some of these answers are based on astronomy. (A day is the time it takes the Earth to make one rotation on its axis. Morning begins when the sun rises. Night begins when the sun sets. Seasons are based on the position of Earth in relation to the sun.) Other measurements of time (months, weeks, hours, minutes, and most holidays) are systems or customs developed by humans. The most difficult type of when questions to answer are based on conditions. These can be weather conditions (such as temperature or precipitation) or living conditions like being happy, being thirsty, or being sick.
Morning or Night
This is the easiest place to begin teaching when questions, with only two possible answers: “in the morning” or “at night”. Four videos & four songs contain a total of eight questions. An additional fill-in-the-blank song is included for you to create your own questions. For the sake of simplicity afternoon is not addressed. If your student has mastered morning vs. night, you can try adding afternoon-based questions along with the instrumental song.
Summer or Winter
Seasons determine the weather, as well as the type of clothes we wear and our preferred leisure activities. Four videos & four songs contain a total of eight questions. An additional fill-in-the-blank song is included for you to create your own season questions. For the sake of simplicity Spring and Fall are not addressed. If your student has mastered Summer vs. Winter, you can try asking Spring and Fall questions along with the instrumental song.
Holidays
Kids. Love. Holidays. Holidays provide a break from the normal routine and often include participating in unique activities, spending time with family, and possibly getting some days away from school. This activity is more difficult, with eight possible choices: Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Easter, 4th of July, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve. Four videos & four songs contain a total of eight questions. An additional fill-in-the-blank song is included for you to create questions about other holidays… Be forewarned, the British definition for “holiday” is “vacation” so if you live in the United Kingdom or your student is a fan of Peppa Pig, you may need to explain the difference.
Days of the Week
If your student has the same weekly school schedule, this works great with the fill-in-the blank song. (However, I’ve worked in schools that have red and blue days or A, B, and C days, when classes are consistently on different days of the week.) If you are aware of your student’s weekly after-school activities, this also works with the fill-in-the blank song. If not, I’ve included a weekly schedule for a hypothetical boy named Michael. Four videos & four songs contain a total of eight questions about Michael’s weekly schedule.
Clock Time
If you have access to your student’s daily class schedule, this works great with the fill-in-the blank song. If not, I’ve included a daily schedule for hypothetical Michael. Four videos & four songs contain a total of eight questions about Michael’s class schedule. Clock times are presented in both analog and digital formats and are all simple times all ending in o’clock.
Conditions
This is the toughest type of when question to answer – the only one without a visual providing a selection of potential answers. Included questions relate to weather conditions, emotions, hygiene, health, classroom procedures, and activities of daily living. Eight videos & eight songs contain a total of sixteen questions. An additional fill-in-the-blank song is included for you to create your own condition questions.
