WH Questions

Music Therapy “wh” question videos & songs for special needs individuals.
Goal: Client will answer, who, what doing, what, and where questions in response to sentences that contain a person, action, thing, and place.
Domains: Language, Academics

This project builds upon skills gained from previous videos, which addressed each type of “wh” question in isolation.
Who questions were taught with Who Do You Know?
What doing questions were taught with What Doing Is An Action
What questions were taught with What Do You Use?
Where questions were taught with Where Do You Go?

The videos begin with lyrics and pictures that review these concepts:

Who is a person.
What doing is an action.
What is a thing.
Where is a place.

This is followed by a sentence that contains a person, action, thing, and place. Each of these components is separated rhythmically and also represented with a picture. Each sentence is repeated four times for children that struggle with reading or attention and to give students an opportunity to listen and sing along. The project contains a total of eight sentences, one per video:

1 The chef / is baking / a cake / at the restaurant

2 The lifeguard / is blowing / a whistle / at the pool

3 The pilot / is landing / a plane / at the airport

4 The teacher / is writing / letters / at the school

5 The boy / is eating / popcorn / at the stadium

6 The girl / is bouncing / a ball / at the playground

7 The man / is feeding / a goat / at the zoo

8 The woman / is reading / a book / at the library

The sentence is followed by one (or two) word questions (Who? What Doing? What? Where?) asked in the order in which they appear in the sentence.

Finally, full sentence questions are asked. This is where some students initially struggle, often by providing an answer using words from question. Who questions might be incorrectly answered with a thing or action. “Who is baking a cake?” may be answered with “a cake” or “baking” instead of a person – the chef. What doing questions are difficult because there are now additional words between “what” and “doing”. “What is the chef doing?” may be misinterpreted as a what question and answered with “cake” instead of the action “baking”. What questions, such as “What is the chef baking?” may again be answered with question words like “the chef” or “baking”. While the where questions only contain a person “Where is the chef?” some students will struggle to provide place answer.

Because this is a difficult skill, the questions are always asked in the order presented in the sentence. Eight regular songs & videos provide both the questions and answers. Eight fill-in-the-blank songs & videos remove the sung answers and visual cues for your student to answer independently. You can also use the instrumental version of the song to create new sentences that are about or are of interest to the child you are working with. If a student has mastered answering these questions in sequence, then I will again ask the same questions, after the songs or videos, in nonsequential order. This insures that the student is not just learning a pattern, but truly comprehending the meaning of various “wh” questions.
