Wash Your Hands
Music Therapy hygiene/safety video & song for special needs individuals.
Goal: Client will follow fives steps to effectively wash their hands.
Domain: Behavior
In the time of coronavirus, an individual’s ability to wash their own hands has become more important now than ever. This song breaks down the process into five steps (as recommended by the Centers for Disease Control).
Step 1: Put water on your hands.
Step 2: Put soap on your hands.
Step 3: Rub your hands together.
Step 4: Rinse the soap off your hands.
Step 5: Dry your hands.
The most problematic step is number 3, rubbing hands together AND doing it for around 20 seconds. Most of the kids I work with don’t have a clear concept of how long 20 seconds is. Singing Happy Birthday twice is recommended, but some individuals are non-verbal and some verbal individuals may have difficulty with rubbing and singing multi-tasking. To solve this dilemma, Step 3 in the Wash Your Hands song lasts for about 20 seconds. In this way, if someone is performing the steps along with the recording, they will stay on Step 3 for the appropriate amount of time.
There are regular versions of the video and song, as well as fill-in-the-blank versions which leave out the sung steps. This is useful for testing to see if your verbal student can recite the steps correctly and in order. You can also use the videos or songs along with included printable SymbolStix visuals. If you are in the classroom instead of the bathroom, your verbal or non-verbal student can practice sequencing the steps needed to successfully wash their hands.
