A common practice for special education classes is to have “Calendar Time” during a morning group. With this project I hope to provide a valuable resource for teachers to use in groups (or one-on-one) to help students navigate a calendar and understand the passage of time.
The videos in this project begin with the order of the seven days, along with visuals that highlight the corresponding columns on a calendar. The first and second times use a calendar with text abbreviations for each day. On the third and fourth repetitions, the text is removed, but the appropriate columns are still highlighted as each day is sung.
The next section of the videos/songs address today, yesterday, and tomorrow. Visuals cues are given during the questions in the form a highlighted column on a calendar with no text. (You may choose to pause the videos at this point to allow your students time to answer if they are able.) Once the answer is sung, the text abbreviations for the days are revealed and then a single day is visually highlighted to emphasize the fact that today, yesterday, and tomorrow are single days rather than a group of days.
To help clarify the meaning of the targeted words, today is defined as the day right now, yesterday is the day before today, and tomorrow is the day after today. Just as a calendar uses squares for each day: yesterday (before) is represented by two squares with an arrow pointing from the right square to the left square and tomorrow (after) is represented by two squares with an arrow pointing from the left square to the right square. Additional Symbolstix visuals of page-a-day calendars are also used with the dates 1, 2, and 3 to represent the sequence of yesterday, today, and tomorrow.
The 1-2-3 visuals are also utilized on an included printable template. Your students can use this template along with included flashcards to put each appropriate day in its correct location. These flashcards come in three varieties: day words, calendars with highlighted columns and text day abbreviations, and calendars with highlighted columns with no text. These visuals may be used by your students during or after the songs & videos.
The project concludes by reviewing all seven days of the week in sequence. There are seven songs and seven videos: one for each day of the week.
