Taking Turns

Music Therapy turn taking videos & songs for special needs individuals.
Goal: Client will demonstrate understanding of subject pronouns (I, you, he, she) and possessive adjectives (my, your, his, her) by passing an object to the appropriate person.
Domains: Social, Language, Speech

Sharing is caring. Learning empathy (the ability to understand and share the feelings of another) can begin with sharing objects with others. Also hidden within this turn taking activity are several essential language concepts.

Subject pronouns are pronouns that take the place of a noun as the subject of a sentence:

I want a turn.
You want a turn.
He wants a turn.
She wants a turn.

Possessive adjectives occur immediately before nouns and describe who that noun belongs to:

It’s my turn.
It’s your turn.
It’s his turn.
It’s her turn.

Video visuals help to clarify these language concepts. Printable visuals are also included to be used in conjunction with the videos or songs.

Taking Turns (I-you-I-you) requires just two people: a teacher and a student.

Taking Turns (I-you-he-she) requires four people: a teacher, a student, an additional male, and an additional female.

If your group consist of two additional males, or two additional females, or just three people instead of four, you may use Taking Turns (fill-in-the-blank) which includes the sung choruses, but allows you to dictate turns by singing the verses.

Because the words I/my and you/your depend on who is speaking/singing, an instrumental song and two instrumental videos are included. Begin with the teacher singing, I/my referring to themselves and you/your referring to the student. Eventually students may be able to take over singing duties. In this case, the student singing I/my will be referencing themselves and you/your will indicate the teacher’s turn.
