Left & Right

Music Therapy left/right videos & songs for special needs individuals.
Goal: Client will differentiate between their left and right hands.

From taking turns playing a board game to following GPS directions, being able to distinguish between left and right is important. Most kids naturally develop this skill between the ages of 5 and 8, but some children need extra help.

This is a call and response song. The “call” is me singing “left” or “right” over a marimba, flute, upright bass, and kick drum. The “response” is the student moving the correct hand, accompanied by the sound of a timpani. A hi-hat maintains the rhythm between turns. The left instruments play an A major chord panned to the left; The right instruments play a C# major chord panned to the right.

The videos come in teaching and testing versions. Teaching videos have an extra visual prompt displaying the words “left” or “right” on the appropriate drum heads; in the testing videos these words are removed.

A total of eight videos include teaching and testing versions for students to play 1 beat, 2 beats, 3 beats, and a longer video that includes 1, 2, and 3 beats. Hands in the videos always indicate the correct responses. Your students should be moving simultaneously with the hands on the screen. If they are waiting and responding you may find the included songs (with no visuals) helpful.

Students can respond in a variety of ways: touching the screen, tapping on their legs, a table, or included printable visuals, playing bongos, tubanos, maracas, or other percussion instruments, or by matching the timpani responses on an electric keyboard.
