Different Coins
Music Therapy mixed coin adding videos & songs for special needs individuals.
Goal: Client will calculate the sum of 2, 3, 4, and 5 coins worth two different values.

After your student can identify coins, knows the coins’ values, and can skip count by 5s, 10s, and 25s, it’s time to start adding different coins together. We start as easy as possible, with just two different types of coins at a time.
The chorus gives two tips: know what each coin’s worth and start with the coin that’s worth most first. The bridge previews the two types of coins to be used and their values. The 4 verses add together 2 coins, 3 coins, 4 coins, and 5 coins.
Two ways to add different coins together are demonstrated. Both start with just 2 coins of two different values, but one adds a coin of the lower value each verse and the other adds a coin of the higher value each verse.
For example, the 4 verses of Different Coins (Nickel + Pennies) go:
Nickel + Penny (5-6)
Nickel + Penny + Penny (5-6-7)
Nickel + Penny + Penny + Penny (5-6-7-8)
Nickel + Penny + Penny + Penny + Penny (5-6-7-8-9)
In contrast, the 4 verses of Different Coins (Nickels + Penny) go:
Nickel + Penny (5-6)
Nickel + Nickel + Penny (5-10-11)
Nickel + Nickel + Nickel + Penny (5-10-15-16)
Nickel + Nickel + Nickel + Nickel + Penny (5-10-15-20-21)
Each video has a regular and a fill-in-the-blank version in which the visual and verbal numbers of the verses are removed for your student to provide the answers.
Songs also come in regular and fill-in-the-blank versions. Songs can be used with real coins, play coins, or a coin abacus.
